Even mentioning it is a disservice, in some ways. On the outside, they're cute, but on the inside, they're cold-blooded competitors! But when it comes to this particular team, it's worth mentioning because they're this "cute" while being the most cold-blooded collection of gymnasts Team USA has ever fielded.

The "Magnificent Seven" got tagged with that particular moniker first-and-foremost because there were, you know, seven of them, but that doesn't mean they weren't magnificent. After Tuesday, though, we'll daresay the edition is more fabulous, though, than that group ever were. That team needed Kerri Strug's iconic final vault to win the gold, one they earned by less than a point Not the slimmest possible margin, maybe, but a far cry from 's 5.

The team was the best in the world. The team is the best in the world, and it's not close. Shannon Miller was a fine, fine gymnast, the silver medalist at the Games in the individual all-around and the second-highest scorer in the team finals. But that team's biggest strength was its depth, with Strug, Dominique Dawes, Dominique Moceanu, and Jaycie Phelps all capable of putting up key scores.

Aly Raisman, the eldest member of the team at 18 years old, was the captain of "The Fierce Five" in London. In addition to helping the team win gold, Raisman also won gold in the individual floor exercise. She won bronze on the balance beam and narrowly missed the podium in the individual all-around with a fourth-place finish. After stealing Americans' hearts during the games, the Needham, Massachusetts, native competed on "Dancing with the Stars" in She made the finals but finished in fourth place.

It wasn't a secret that Ross was what I like to call, the "stone face" of the team—while most of the girls were crying when they made the Olympic team, she was not. And it's good to have a team member like that. Ross stood up, went out there and gave it her all—she didn't worry or she didn't show it anyway about the emotional pressures and all that that can absolutely destroy an athlete.

I tip my hat to Ross for being able to contain her emotions and perform so well—at only 15 years old. She certainly could be back for the Rio Games in Not to take away from Aly Raisman's London performance, but she was the one who capitalized on Jordyn Wieber's mistakes during the preliminary round and earned herself entry into the all-around competition. In the end, she was unable by the slimmest of margins to get a medal, but that doesn't sum up her story. She was happy just to make the Games, and she wound up being among some of the world's best, and she gave some of the best performances.

Her floor routines were next to flawless, and she may have gotten a medal if it weren't for one bad round on the beam that came at an inopportune time.

Seeing one of the underdogs sneak into the all-around competition was truly a good story to see play out, and Raisman performed admirably after seizing her moment. What else can you call her? Aside from falling a couple steps out of bounds during her first floor routine on Sunday, Gabby Douglas was incredible. Outside of Wieber, Douglas was carrying the most pressure on the team.

She was so very impressive to watch on the beam and perhaps even more so on the uneven bars.
